What is the purpose of Enterprise Architecture? Building models or solving Enterprise problems?

The purpose of EA is to enhance enterprise performance, through the innovations that people invest in.
Producing models to illustrate how that will happen in practice is one of the capabilities need for success, but isn't the core purpose of EA.
A particular challenge facing Enteprise Architects is that an enterprise (unlike a building, a landscape, etc) is not a physical entity, so producing models that are meaningful analogy for the enterprise depends on an especially good understanding of the audience
